How to add a new unit called "Horse Archer" to CivIII by using Civ3Edit.....

If you are reading this then you must have already downloaded all the files to the Horse Archer folder into
Program_Files/Infogrames_Interactive/Civilization_III/Art/units .All we need to do now is create the unit in
CivIII and give it some stats.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: In order to add new units you MUST download the hacked 1.21f Civ3Editor created by Jimmyh
or the Civ3CopyTool by Gramphos. I suggest that you do this now, then continue as follows:-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT TO DO:

1) Double left click Civ3Edit
(this can be found on your PC by clicking on "start", then "Programs", then "Infogrames_Interactive", then "Civilization_III", then "Civ3Edit".
You can also find it by using Windows Explorer, or you may already have the Civ3Edit icon on your desktop)

2) In Civ3Edit you will see a blue ocean with some artic ice along the top. Above the ice you will see some
controls: left click on "Tools", then "Use_Default_Rules" and click on "OK".

3) Now left click on "Rules", then "Edit_Rules", then look for the "Units" tab and click that. You will now see the edit CivIII rules screen,
   with the settler unit highlighted.

4) IMPORTANT NOTE: if you cannot see any add or delete buttons you MUST download the hacked 1.21f editor created by Jimmyh or the Civ3CopyTool by Gramphos. If you CAN see these buttons, click on "Add".
A new popup has appeared called "Add Unit Type". Type the name Horse Archer and click "OK".

5) We have now created a new unit called "Horse Archer", but at the moment it looks like a settler. No problem, just click the icon box
and get to number 66 to give the new unit the Horse Archer picture.

6) It's time to fill in all the unit boxes to make the unit come alive (the following are suggestions only):-
   Prerequisite            =   Feudalism
Upgrade to = Knight (remember, nations who can't build Knights will build the earlier unit instead; i.e. Horse Archers)
   Shield cost = 5
   Moves                   =   3
   Attack Strenght = 3
   Defense Strenght = 2
   Zone of Control = tick
   Required Resources = Horses (obviously)
Unit Abilities = Mounted and Range Attack Animation (NOTE: hold down the Ctrl key to make multiple selections)
Available to = Barbarians, Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Aztecs, Zululand, Iroquois (Again, use the Ctrl key)
Civilopedia Entry = type PRTO_Horse_Archer (NOTE: see below for more Civilopeadia stuff)
Special Actions = tick Load, Airlift, Pilage and Upgrade Unit
   AI Strategies = tick Offense

And thats it, you've finished. There is no 'ok' button because all these changes are automaticlly saved when you close Civ3Edit.
(By the way, if you want the non-european nations to use Horse Archers instead of Knights, don't forget to change to the Knight
unit and using Ctrl+left click deselect Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Aztects, Zuland and Iroquois to stop them building Knights. Otherwise,
these nations will build Knights instead of Horse Archers when they reach Chivalry).
One last thing: goto the Horsemen unit, the War Chariot unit and the Mounted Warrior unit and make them upgrade to the new
Horse Archer instead of upgrading to Knights. This will stop these units being built in the Medieval/Industrial/Modern ages.

All you need to do now is click "close" then click "file" and "save" and save as civ3mod.

THE HORSE ARCHER CIVILOPEDIA ENTRIES (created by nonnob3)

Although it is NOT necessary in order to make the unit work in the game, here is how to set up the Civilopeadia entries :-
In the Horse Archer unit folder you will find four files called 66HorseArcherlarge, 66HorseArchersmall, PediaIcons and Civilopeadia_text.

1) copy or move the two 66HorseArcher PaintShop files into CivilizationIII/Art/Civilopeadia/Icons/units.

2) copy or move the PediaIcons file into CivilizationIII/Text (NOTE: this will overwrite the current version, so make a copy first).

3) next, doubleclick my Civilopeadia_text file to open it and "copy" all the contents (we will "paste" it in a moment).

4) now go to CivilizationIII/Text and doubleclick "civilopeadia" to open it.

5) Last of all, scroll down to the Mounted Units section and "paste" all the text that you copied in item 3) above.

Thats it. Job done.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CUSTOMIZING YOUR HORSE ARCHER

I have included two different attack animations with this unit. They are called:-
HorseArcherAttackG.flc (this is the original "galloping-on-the-spot-shooting-sideways" animation) and
HorseArcherAttackS.flc (this is a less dynamic "standing-still-shooting-forwards" animation).
Should you prefer the "standing-still" version (and I admit that my first "galloping" version takes....er....a little getting used to!) then just:-

1) go to CivilzationIII/Art/units/Horse Archer folder and doubleclick the Horse Archer.ini file to open it.
2) now simply change "HorseArcherAttackG.flc" to "HorseArcherAttackS.flc" and save.
(NOTE: you must also change the "HorseArcherDeathG.flc" to "HorseArcherDeathS.flc" so that the animations match up).

The good news is that this can be done mid game. Although CivIII does not like new units being added to a saved game, this is only an
animation change, so as far as CivIII is concerned it is not a rule change.
